Alexander Snowvechkin

I don't need to say too much... the news has really covered it all. DC has been blanketed in more snow over the past week than any winter in the past 100 years or something like that.

For my first winter ever, we got a storm that pretty much shut the city down for a week. People flocked to grocery stores like a war was coming... the above picture is of what used to be the eggs shelf in Safeway in Dupont Circle. Work last Friday was cut short by increasing amounts of snow and by the time Monday came around, there was so much snow on the ground, people couldn't safely get into the city from Virginia and Maryland so the Federal Government closed down.

The first round over the weekend dumped 2 feet down on us and walking outside (where it was possible) felt like navigating World War I trenches. The second round on Tuesday was accompanied with high winds and made my jaunts outside very Little House on the Prairie-like. Even after the snow stopped coming down, things in the city felt almost post-apocalyptic as cars were buried under snow and people walked in the middle of deserted streets in small groups.

Of all the puns that came out of this storm like Snowpocalypse and Snowmageddon, my favorite is a play on the name of Washington Capitals player Alex Ovechkin. They both seem to be powerful natural forces that will mess you up.

Until next time, snow long!
